Dodgers Opening Day Roster: Emmet Sheehan Placed On 15-Day Injured List

The Los Angeles Dodgers placed Emmet Sheehan to the 15-day injured list as part of setting their Opening Day roster for the Tokyo Series.

The move is largely procedural and does not indicate a change in Sheehan’s rehab from right elbow surgery.

Sheehan was expected to compete for a rotation spot in Spring Training last year, but he suffered body soreness early in camp which limited him.

Sheehan was later diagnosed with right forearm inflammation that led to being placed on the injured list in March. He eventually underwent to Tommy John surgery in May.

Now nearly 10 months removed from the procedure, Sheehan is happy with how his recovery process has been.

“I’ve been feeling great,” Sheehan said at DodgerFest. “I’m throwing, about eight and a half months out of surgery, so it’s been all good. They take really good care of us down in Arizona when we’re rehabbing, so that’s been awesome. Good group of guys.”

With his current progress, Sheehan is expected to begin a rehab assignment as early as May, or sometime in June. He was originally expected to begin those in July, but he has progressed well.

Sheehan made his MLB debut during the 2023 season, going 4-1 with a 4.92 ERA and 64 strikeouts in 60.1 innings pitched but showing elite stuff and a ton of upside.

When he returns, the Dodgers are likely to be cautious with the right-hander, focusing more on his long-term outlook than attempting to get immediate production.

Emmet Sheehan remained confident after surgery

After making the decision to undergo Tommy John surgery, Sheehan remained optimistic and confident he would return.

“It’s a lot more common now and they have a lot more experience rehabbing this type of thing,” Sheehan said after his surgery. “So definitely good to be around a lot of people that have that experience. And I haven’t been through a rehab that long, but I know what it looks like, so not too scary.”
