Dodgers Offense Struggles For Second Straight Night Resulting In Loss To Rockies

After a record-breaking month in terms of home runs, the Los Angeles Dodgers offense has gone quiet during their weekend series against the Colorado Rockies.

They were defeated 3-1 in the opener on Friday, and they then lost by the same score on Saturday as Rockies starter German Marquez tossed a gem at Dodger Stadium.

Neither offense was able to get going early, with both starting pitchers retiring the first nine hitters they faced in order. D.J. LeMahieu was the first batter on either team to reach base, doubling to lead off the fourth inning.

He later came around to score on a strikeout by Dodgers starter Kenta Maeda that got past Yasmani Grandal, giving the Rockies a 1-0 lead. Ian Desmond then hit a solo home run off Maeda in the fifth to double that lead.

Marquez carried his perfect game bid into the sixth inning, although Kiké broke that up with a leadoff home run to cut the Dodgers deficit to 2-1 through six innings.

The Rockies tacked on another run in the seventh though when Trevor Story hit a ground-rule double to begin the inning and then scored on a single up the middle by Chris Iannetta. Maeda was able to get through seven innings, striking out nine while allowing three runs, two of which were earned.

The Dodgers bullpen did their job in relief of Maeda, but the offense continued to struggle against Marquez. The hard-throwing right-hander gave up just two hits and one run in eight innings of working, striking out nine. His fastball was touching triple digits in the eighth inning.

Adam Ottovino, not Wade Davis, came in to pitch the ninth inning for the Rockies and set the Dodgers down easily to complete the 3-1 victory.
