The Los Angeles Dodgers received some bad news on Wednesday with Blake Snell shutting down his throwing program once again after a setback while playing catch.
The Dodgers’ most expensive signing of the offseason has only thrown nine innings for the team in 2025. Snell is expected to miss more time than the Dodgers initially anticipated, despite receiving a “best-case scenario” from an MRI just a couple of weeks ago.
The Dodgers don’t feel the need to rush Snell back because they are confident in their ability to get by until he is fully healthy. Still having plenty of time remaining in the season is partly why Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said there isn’t much concern even though Snell won’t be throwing for a period of time that’s still to be determined, as seen on SportsNet LA:
“I wouldn’t say concerning, because part of the messaging from us to Blake is, it’s about later on in the season and if there’s any type of discomfort, let’s not try to fight through it. I say this a lot, given where we’re at right now on the calendar, not concerned at all. Even talking to Blake [Tuesday], wasn’t concerned.”
After the healthiest season of his career in 2023 with the San Diego Padres, Snell did miss a significant amount of time with the San Francisco Giants last year. He dealt with a left adductor strain and left groin strain at various points in 2024.
The last time that Snell had any issues with his left shoulder came in 2018, when he was placed on the 10-day injured list with shoulder fatigue. Though in that instance he only missed one start
During Snell’s bullpen session on April 19, he acknowledged there was still some discomfort in his throwing shoulder but otherwise thought it went well.
What is next for Blake Snell?
Given the latest setback, the Dodgers could be looking at another two-week absence from Snell. The left-hander is due for a re-examination of his troublesome left shoulder, which could provide a clearer picture of the situation and help set a timeline moving forward.
