Tyler Glasnow isn’t scheduled to start until a potential Game 4 of the National League Division Series, but still found a way to contribute in the Los Angeles Dodgers’ 5-3 comeback win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday.
The right-hander was the first reliever to enter the game after Shohei Ohtani completed six innings.
Glasnow faced the minimum in the seventh inning and recorded two more outs in the eighth before leaving with the bases loaded. Alex Vesia then stranded the three baserunners to keep the Dodgers’ lead intact.
It was Glasnow’s first career relief appearance in the postseason and he enjoyed getting to experience a different side of pitching, via Bill Plunkett of the Southern California News Group:
“Definitely different. I was in the bathroom and the phone rang and they yelled my name. I was like, ‘Here we go.’ I warmed up and it was kind of fun.”
Glasnow had exclusively served as a starting pitcher for the Dodgers until Saturday, with the only exception being a relief appearance during an exhibition game in Japan this year.
Prior to that, Glasnow last pitched in a meaningful game out of the bullpen during the 2018 season as a member of the Pittsburgh Pirates.
The 32-year-old was included on the Dodgers roster for the Wild Card Series as a reliever due to the team only needing three starters against the Cincinnati Reds.
Glasnow went 4-3 with a 3.30 ERA, 3.82 FIP, 1.09 WHIP and 10.6 strikeouts per nine in 87.1 innings across 17 starts during the regular season.
Tyler Glasnow among Dodgers starters in bullpen role
Glasnow is among a group of Dodgers starters who have pitched out of the bullpen this postseason, with Emmet Sheehan and Roki Sasaki also making relief appearances.
Clayton Kershaw is also on the Dodgers’ roster for the NLDS and should pitch out of the bullpen at some point as well.
