Los Angeles Dodgers right fielder Yasiel Puig missed out on a Gold Glove Award, but won a Wilson Defensive Player of the Year Award in right field. Wilson awards one winner at each defensive position, plus one to the top defensive team, and top overall player.
The Wilson Defensive Player of the Year Awards are based on defensive war (25 percent), defensive runs saved (25 percent), inside edge fielding ratings (20 percent), inside edge arm ratings (20 percent) and fielding percentage (10 percent).
Puig ranked fourth among qualified National League right fielders in innings played (1,201.2) and Defensive Runs Above Average (DEF) with 5.1. Moreover, he finished the season with the best UZR/150 (15.5), and tied with Jayson Heward for most Defensive Runs Saved, with 18.
Puig committed only one error, recorded four assists, and posted the second-highest fielding percentage in right field at .996.
While he was denied a Gold Glove by Heyward, Puig vowed to continue with his stellar defensive play and win one next season. Dodgers general manager Farhan Zaidi and manager Dave Roberts previously expressed Puig was Gold Glove worthy.
On multiple occasions Roberts went so far as to deem the 26-year-old the best right fielder in all of baseball.
