Los Angeles Dodgers right fielder Yasiel Puig got into it with San Francisco Giants catcher Nick Hundley on Aug. 14 as Hundley took exception to Puig getting angry at himself after fouling off a pitch he felt he should have hit.
Hundley didn’t enforce any physical contact though, so he was just fined for his actions, while Puig was fined and suspended two games for putting his hands on Hundley. As is normally the case when players get suspended for fighting, Puig appealed the suspension so he has been able to play throughout the last couple weeks.
The appeal has taken longer than usual to come to a conclusion, but the Dodgers announced on Tuesday that Puig’s appeal was denied and he will serve the two-game suspension beginning on Tuesday against the New York Mets.
While it will be tough for the Dodgers to be without their starting right fielder for the next couple days, it doesn’t come at the worst time as the rosters are expanded from 25 to 40 and Puig will be back in time for the start of the team’s big series against the Colorado Rockies this weekend at Coors Field.
Additionally, Puig has struggled a bit in recent weeks, so he could benefit greatly from three straight days of rest. In his last 15 games, Puig is hitting just .163/.212/.224 without a home run.
Overall on the season, Puig has slashed .259/.318/.451 with 15 home runs and 47 RBI in 104 games while also stealing 14 bases in 18 attempts.
This is not the first altercation that Puig has gotten into with the Giants as him and Madison Bumgarner have gotten into it a couple times as well, so it is something to keep an eye on when the Dodgers play San Francisco again later this month.
