Whether in Los Angeles or New York, all cities on Monday experienced a moment of darkness as a total solar eclipse swept across the United States. In areas with clear skies, the sun’s outer atmosphere appeared as a white ring around the moon.

As the moon drifted and the sun reemerged, it created the appearance of a diamond ring. The rare celestial spectacle was the first total eclipse of the sun that was be visible from the U.S. since 1979.

The timing of the eclipse in Pittsburgh overlapped with the Los Angeles Dodgers arriving at PNC Park in preparation for the start of a four-game series.

Like most other citizens, the players used the opportunity to don the protective eyewear and glance into the sky to witness the phenomenon.

Brandon Morrow, Yasiel Puig, Justin Turner and David Vassegh of AM 570 L.A. Sports Radio were among those who documented the experience on Twitter.

Following the Dodgers’ win over the Pirates, Puig and Turner combined to create their own eclipse in the clubhouse.

Around the same time players were seizing the photo opportunities during the afternoon, Clayton Kershaw was taking the mound for a simulated game. He was scheduled for three innings, wound up completing four, and now will make a rehab start with Triple-A Oklahoma City on Saturday.
