Will Smith’s go-ahead two-run double helped the Los Angeles Dodgers secure a 6-4 comeback win in 10 innings over the San Francisco Giants on Monday.
The 29-year-old smoked a sinker off Taylor Rogers that bounced in front of the center-field wall to score Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman. Smith finished the night with two hits and two RBI in five at-bats.
Smith’s clutch hit was his latest off a left-hander pitcher; he’s now batting a scorching .442/.528/.744 with seven doubles, two home runs and 11 RBI in 53 plate appearances against southpaws this season.
Smith attributed his success against lefties to sticking to his approach at the plate, via SportsNet LA:
“It’s just baseball, I have no idea. Just trying to stick to my approach, put together good at-bats, drive the ball. So yeah, that’s just baseball right now.”
Smith is in the midst of another outstanding season but had been 0-for-his-last-16 entering play Monday. He hopes there will be more good offensive performances after rediscovering his mechanics and spending extra time in the batting cage:
“Just getting back to what I do well. I kind of lost my mechanics for a week or so. But that happens, and you just continue to work, continue to put the work in the cage, and figure out how to get out of it.”
Even with his recent slump, Smith is still batting an excellent .309/.371/.475 with 11 doubles, four home runs and 28 RBI in 159 plate appearances over 36 games this season.
Will Smith participated in ‘Dodgers Comedy Night’
Smith and his wife Cara presented the “Dodgers Comedy Night” as part of the Netflix is a Joke Fest on May 8 at the Orpheum Theatre in Los Angeles.
The event was hosted by Cedric The Entertainer, and all proceeds went to Catching Hope, Smith’s Foundation, which works to help at-risk low-income youths in transition with critical skills needed for leadership, self-advocacy, and self-sufficiency.
