The 2021 college football season came to a close Monday night as the No. 3 Georgia Bulldogs knocked off the No. 1 Alabama Crimson Tide, 33-18, to capture their first national championship in 41 years.
The meeting was a rematch of the SEC Championship Game on December 4, when Alabama handed Georgia their only loss of the season. The Bulldogs not only redeemed themselves, but also picked up their first win over the Crimson Tide since 2007.
Georgia defeating Alabama in the championship game ensured that for a fourth time in the last five years, an SEC team took home the trophy.
Los Angeles Dodgers All-Star Walker Buehler supports his Vanderbilt Commodores first and foremost, but couldn’t be happier the national championship is staying in the conference.
My Dores prolly won’t be in this spot maybe ever… therefore I gotta take some pride in the #SEC bringing home another trophy. It’s just different
— Walker Buehler (@buehlersdayoff) January 11, 2022
Buehler’s alma mater is coming off a forgettable season in which they finished last in the SEC East division with a 2-10 record and 0-8 showing against conference opponents.
The Commodores don’t have a rich football history, but remain one of the premier college baseball programs in the country. They advanced to their fifth College World Series appearance last year and have won two titles, including in 2014, when Buehler was a sophomore.
Buehler was impressed by Bryce Young in Alabama comeback against Auburn
Although Alabama fell short against Georgia, they still had plenty to be proud this past season. The Crimson Tide went 13-2, which included a 24-22 comeback win over the Auburn Tigers on November 27.
Buehler was particularly impressed with Pasadena, Calif., native Bryce Young, who led the team on a 97-yard touchdown drive to tie the game with 24 seconds remaining.
Alabama needed a fourth overtime to escape with a victory, which marked the first time the Iron Bowl matchup had ever gone into overtime.
