The Los Angeles Dodgers offense was held in check for a third straight game on Tuesday night, resulting in a 1-0 loss at the hands of Wade Miley and the Milwaukee Brewers.
The Dodgers only managed two hits on the night, with both coming off Miley during his seven shutout innings. their only real scoring chance came in the bottom of the seventh when Cody Bellinger launched a fly ball to deep center that would have been a game-tying home run if it were not for Lorenzo Cain robbing him.
While the offense stalled, the Dodgers pitching staff turned in a solid performance that began with rookie Walker Buehler.
He was able to get through seven innings for just the third time this season, while throwing a career-high 105 pitches. Buehler allowed just five hits and one run on the evening, falling one shy of his career high with seven strikeouts without issuing a single walk.
Buehler was coming off a couple outings that weren’t his best, and explained he worked with Dodgers pitching coach Rick Honeycutt to make mechanical changes which led to success, via Ken Gurnick of MLB.com:
“Might be the first time in my career I had to look at my delivery, I’ve always been feel-based,” said Buehler. “First time I’ve done that and it made a big difference. I wasn’t pleased with my last outing and the one before that, went back to the drawing board and figured it out.”
Tuesday night marked the first time since Buehler came back from a microfracture in his ribs that he looked like his pre-injury self. So that is one silver lining that the Dodgers can take away from an otherwise disappointing performance.
With Ross Stripling currently on the 10-day disabled list and potentially moving to the bullpen when he returns, it looks like Buehler will be a mainstay in the rotation for at least the immediate future.
