When thinking of the Los Angeles Dodgers and the organization’s history that can be traced back to Brooklyn, it’s impossible for Hall of Fame announcer Vin Scully not to come to mind.
While Scully receives plenty of praise, and deservedly so, the Dodgers also employ other announcers/broadcasters who have gained national recognition.
One being Alanna Rizzo, who last month was presented the “HOPE Rising” award by Hispanas Organized for Political Equality (HOPE) for her leadership and innovation in her field while representing the Latina community.
Additionally, Charley Steiner is a member of the National Radio Hall of Fame, while Jaime Jarrin, like Scully, is part of the Baseball Hall of Fame.
Along with Jarrin and Scully, Orel Hershiser and Rick Monday each won an award at the annual Southern California Sports Broadcaster Awards, according to Jon Weisman of Dodger Insider:
Vin Scully won two awards for best play-by-play — in radio and in television — at the 25th annual Southern California Sports Broadcaster Awards, announced today at the Lakeside Golf Club.
Jaime Jarrin was named best foreign-language play-by-play announcer, while Orel Hershiser was the winner in TV color analysis and Rick Monday in radio color commentary.
Scully has now won the radio award 18 times, and the television award 13 times. He’s set to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Los Angeles Sports Council on Feb. 25.
Jarrin spent last season calling Dodgers games in Spanish with his son Jorge for KTNQ (1020-AM). It was the first time in the Hall of Famer’s career he was joined by his son in the radio booth. A fixture with the Dodgers since 1958, Jarrin signed on for three more seasons last September.
Hershiser returned to his Dodgers roots for the 2014 season as he joined Time Warner Cable’s SportsNet LA telecasts as a color commentator. Along with providing commentary from the SportsNet LA booth during road games, Hershiser regularly appears on the network’s original programming.
Monday worked as an analyst and play-by-play man last season for AM 570 LA Sports; he also was the co-host for the radio pre-game show. Monday joined the Dodgers broadcast team in 1993 and is the recipient of five Southern California Broadcast Awards, among other honors.
