The Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday recalled Trayce Thompson from Triple-A Oklahoma City and placed Franklin Gutierrez on the 10-day disabled list with a left-hamstring strain. Gutierrez’s DL stint is retroactive to Tuesday. He’s eligible to be reinstated Saturday, April 22.
Gutierrez suffered the injury when he was caught stealing during the second inning of the Dodgers’ loss to the Chicago Cubs. There wasn’t an immediate sign of discomfort, though ESPN cameras caught Gutierrez stretching in the dugout and pointing to his hamstring area before retiring to the clubhouse.
Gutierrez becomes the eighth player the Dodgers have put on the disabled list this season. They set an MLB record in 2016 by placing 28 different players on the DL.
Thompson batted .226/.351/.323 with one home run, three RBI and six walks in 11 Cactus League games this year. The Dodgers slow-played Thomspon, who did not make his spring debut until March 11.
Thompson has maintained he’s fully recovered from the multiple back fractures that cut his 2016 campaign short. The versatile outfielder hit .225/.302/.436 with 11 doubles, 13 home runs and 32 RBI over 80 games with the Dodgers last season.
He was particularly hot last May, batting .270/.352/.603 with three doubles, six home runs and 14 RBI while appearing in 21 games. Thompson appeared in 39 consecutive games from May 31 through July 10.
The streak ending coincided with the book on Thompson’s 2016 season coming to a close. Though, he did attempt to accelerate the recovery down the stretch of the season. Thompson went hitless in five games (13 at-bats) with Oklahoma City, but did have one RBI and two walks.
