Dodgers News: Tony Gonsolin’s Outlook Unchanged After Being Transferred To 60-Day Injured List

The Los Angeles Dodgers made several roster moves last week, which included transferring Tony Gonsolin to the 60-day injured list. He now is not eligible to return until Wednesday, Aug. 6.

“Yeah, I think so,” manager Dave Roberts answered when asked if the paper move was expected.

“I think that with Tony, I don’t know if it does happen, I don’t know when his time of return is, but I think that just kind of his history, and not picking up a baseball and the progression to get him back, 40-man roster management, there’s just not really much margin or expectation for him to be back before that. So it makes sense.”

Gonsolin was originally put on the 15-day IL June 7 due to right elbow discomfort. That caused some concern as the 31-year-old is in his first season since having Tommy John surgery.

However, an MRI revealed that the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) in Gonsolin’s right elbow remained intact. He nevertheless was shut down from throwing last month and still has not started throwing.

Gonsolin began to experience right elbow trouble in the days after his start on June 4. He pitched five innings and allowed three runs (two earned) in the Dodgers’ loss to the New York Mets.

Gonsolin has gone 3-2 with a 5.00 ERA and 1.42 WHIP in 36 innings across seven starts so far this season. He struggled with his command, which led to increased walk and home run totals, especially in the first innings of his outings.

With Gonsolin unavailable, the Dodgers rotation currently consists of Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Dustin May, Clayton Kershaw, Shohei Ohtani and Ben Casparius. However, the group is in a much better spot with Emmet Sheehan recently making his 2025 debut, Ohtani going through his buildup in games and Tyler Glasnow beginning a rehab assignment.

Tony Gonsolin frustrated by right elbow injury

Gonsolin was sidelined to begin the 2025 season and now faces another prolonged down stretch.

“I know ultimately how I’m feeling is I’m letting the team down and those are innings that I should be eating up,” Gonsolin recently said. “It’s baseball, it happens, injuries happen. It just really sucks. I’m very frustrated.

“After all the time I spent strengthening it and going through that, then to have my back (injury) and now this, I’m just very frustrated with where my body is at. That it’s not holding together as of now.

“Just trying to get through it, hopefully this isn’t too long and I’ll finish the year strong in the playoffs.”
