Dodgers News: Tony Gonsolin Recalled, Josh Sborz Optioned To Triple-A Oklahoma City

The Los Angeles Dodgers officially recalled Tony Gonsolin and optioned Josh Sborz to Triple-A Oklahoma City. Reports of Gonsolin’s forthcoming arrival first surfaced Sunday, though they were with the expectation he would start Tuesday against the Colorado Rockies.

The Dodgers instead are handing the ball to Julio Urias for a sixth start of the season, but only his first since doing so June 20. Like against the Rockies, that outing was a spot start that became necessary because of injury.

Urias effectively will serve as an opener, which should lend to Gonsolin appearing in a second career game with the Dodgers. The right-hander made his MLB debut July 26 against the Arizona Diamondbacks but had a forgetful start.

Sloppy defense didn’t aid matters as the Diamondbacks jumped out to a 4-0 lead before Gonsolin could record an out in the first inning. He wound up allowing six runs (four earned) in just four innings.

Gonsolin is 1-4 with a 4.95 ERA and 1.97 WHIP in 12 starts for Oklahoma City this season. He missed time in April and May due to an oblique injury.

Sborz returns to OKC one night after joining the Dodgers for his second stint in the Majors. Sborz allowed three runs on four hits, including a two-run home run to David Dahl, in two innings of Monday’s loss to the Rockies. Sborz worked a scoreless seventh before allowing three runs in the eighth.

His MLB debut came June 20 against the San Francisco Giants, when Sborz also allowed three runs but in only one inning.
