Ahead of Saturday’s doubleheader against the Washington Nationals, the Los Angeles Dodgers activated left-hander reliever Tony Cingrani off of the 10-day disabled list and optioned fellow southpaw Adam Liberatore to Triple-A Oklahoma City.
Cingrani missed the last couple of weeks with left shoulder inflammation after going through a period that he described as ‘dead arm.’ He last appeared in the Dodgers recent series against the Arizona Diamondbacks, tossing a scoreless inning.
In 18 games so far this seasons, he’s 0-2 with a 5.79 ERA, 2.94 FIP and 1.29 WHIP. Cingrani has 22 strikeouts compared to just four walks in 14 innings pitched.
After experiencing the arm trouble, Cingrani really struggled on the mound before finally being placed on the disabled list. In his last seven appearances, he gave up 10 hits and seven runs in 5.2 innings (11.12 ERA), and batters hit .370 against him during that span.
Liberatore made 12 appearances this season for the Dodgers, yielding a 3.38 ERA, 2.64 FIP and 1.25 WHIP, while striking out eight and walking four in eight innings.
The Dodgers are playing a doubleheader on Saturday due to Friday’s series opener getting postponed because of rain. With more inclement weather in the forecast for Saturday, it will be interesting to see if they are able to get both games in.
Because it’s a doubleheader, both teams are allowed to call up a 26th man for the second game, and for the Dodgers that’s expected to be Yimi Garcia. Newly acquired reliever Erik Goeddel is also expected to be activated, which will require another roster move.
