Dodgers News: Tommy Edman Hopes To Be Ready For Opening Day But Won’t Rush Ankle

Tommy Edman is on the mend after undergoing a debridement procedure on his right ankle to address the injury that plagued him during the second half of the 2025 season.

Edman was limited to just 97 games last year and primarily played second base as the Dodgers looked to manage the health of his troublesome right ankle.

Edman has been recovering from the operation, and he could potentially be in danger of missing Opening Day.

While the 30-year-old hopes to be ready for the start of the regular season, he won’t force himself into action if his ankle isn’t completely back to full health.

“I think it all depends on how the progression goes along,” Edman said at DodgerFest over the weekend. “I’m not putting that as a hard line in the sand. I am doing everything I can to be ready for Opening Day.

“But if it comes around to that time and my ankle is 90%, not quite where I need it to be, I’m going to do my best to be patient with it and get it back to 100% and not deal with it for the rest of the year.”

Edman previously shared that his procedure went well and expects to return to full health this year, even if it’s a little later than he would have hoped. At DodgerFest, Edman also revealed the surgery involved a procedure for his damaged ligaments.

Despite missing stretches of the 2025 season, Edman tied a career high with 13 home runs and finished with 49 RBI, which were the third-most he’s had in a single year.

Edman is expected to receive most of his opportunities at second base this season but also figures to see time in center field depending on the health of his ankle.

Dodgers’ options at second base if Tommy Edman misses Opening Day

If Edman is unavailable for Opening Day, Andy Ibáńez, Miguel Rojas and Hyeseong Kim figure to split the reps at second base. Andy Pages will also be the primary center fielder until Edman returns.
