Coming on the heels of being named MLB Player of the Year by Sporting News in October, Shohei Ohtani has been chosen as their Male Athlete of the Year as well at the end of his first season with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The award was voted on by the staff of The Sporting News and it’s the first time he received the honor from the publication. Along with his recognition from The Sporting News, Ohtani was also named the Male Athlete of the Year for a third time from The Associated Press on Dec. 23.
It is another addition to the laundry list of accolades Ohtani received for the 2024 season after his phenomenal year. The list includes a fourth consecutive All-Star nod, an All-MLB First Team honor, a Silver Slugger, the Hank Aaron Award, the Edgar Martinez Award, a unanimous MVP award, and most importantly, a World Series Championship.
Ohtani also earned Player of the Week honors four times this past season, as well as being named Player of the Month for September.
Ohtani became MLB’s first 50-50 club member while he was also finished his campaign hitting .310/.390/.646. It was his second consecutive season with an on-base plus slugging percentage of more than 1.000.
He steadied the league’s best offense in terms of runs scored with 842 and helped the Dodgers win their first team Silver Slugger award.
Ohtani’s contributions helped the Dodgers secure the best record in baseball despite the countless injures sustained by the roster.
