Los Angeles Dodgers outfield prospect D.J. Peters of the High-A Rancho Cucamonga Quakes was named California League Player of the Week for July 3-9. It’s the third time this season Peters has received the honor, previously winning it for games played April 24-30 and June 12-18.
The past week was particularly memorable for Peters, as he and the Quakes squared off against San Francisco Giants ace Madison Bumgarner who was on a rehab assignment with San Jose. The Quakes got to Bumgarner to the tune of nine runs on nine hits in four innings.
Included in that was an eight-run fourth inning that saw Peters twice homer off the left-hander. Then in a series in which Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim MVP Mike Trout was on a rehab assignment, Peters went 6-for-14 with one home run.
He finished the week 13-for-29 (.448 batting average) with three home runs and seven RBIs in seven games.
On the season Peters leads the California League with 19 home runs, while hitting .284/.389/.559 to go along with 57 RBIs in 84 games. The Dodgers drafted Peters in the fourth round in 2016 out of Western Nevada College, and he’s quickly become one of the organization’s rising Minor Leaguers.
Other Quakes to earn Cal League honors this season are Yusniel Diaz (Player of the Month and Week), Will Smith and Mitchell White.
