The Los Angeles Dodgers were active in spreading holiday spirit and providing for those in need over the past few weeks, and included in that was Mookie Betts partnering with the Metro Nashville Police Department.

Although Betts was not able to be in his home state, he contributed to 10 families in the Napier-Sudekum receiving Christmas gifts. Betts spoke with kids via FaceTime as members of the police department delivered presents to families.

Last year Betts worked with the Metro Police’s Midtown Hills Precinct in Nashville to donate toys for 23 families and 83 kids.

Betts also was active for Thanks giving as he joined the Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation for a turkey giveaway at Algin Sutton Recreation Center.

“You’ve got to remember where you came from. For me, I came from an area like this in Nashville,” Betts said from the site of the first and 50th Dodgers Dreamfields. “I finally got to my spot in life where I can give back, and you never know whose day you can affect.

“I do anything and everything I can to help out … This is like my home now. You’ve got to help your hometown. I’m going to be here for a long time, and really I’m just here to help anyone.”

The Christmas holiday also saw the Dodgers surprise students at four local elementary schools with a visit from Santa and gifts, and part-owner Magic Johnson organized a recent toy drive as well.

Betts invited to Kentucky basketball game

The offseason has been a bit of a whirlwind for Betts, who got married, took a honeymoon in Mexico and was invited by head coach John Calipari to attend a Kentucky basketball game in Las Vegas and speak with the team.

Calipari is cousins with TJ Friedl, and wanted to show his appreciation for Betts and highlight his unselfishness in retrieving the first home run ball for the Cincinnati Reds rookie.
