Los Angeles Dodgers prospect Miguel Vargas was named the Triple-A Player of the Year by Baseball America for his season with the Oklahoma City Dodgers.
Vargas was one of just 11 prospects in the Minor Leagues to bat 350 times while posting at least a .300 average, .400 on-base percentage and .500 slugging. The 22-year-old hit .304/.402/.511 with 17 home runs, 82 RBI, 99 runs scored and 16 stolen bases across 112 games for Triple-A Oklahoma City.
Vargas was previously named the Dodgers’ 2022 Minor League Player of the Year by Baseball America as well.
He had a breakout season in 2021 that saw him earn the Dodgers’ Branch Rickey Minor League Player of the Year honors. Vargas began the 2022 season with Triple-A Oklahoma City and was among the prospects to represent the Dodgers in the 2022 Futures Game at Dodger Stadium, along with Diego Cartaya and Bobby Miller.
Vargas earned a promotion and made his MLB debut on Aug. 3 against the San Francisco Giants. He went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI in his debut while showing off some of the confidence that has made him one of the most exciting prospects in baseball.
Vargas played one more game with L.A. before getting optioned back to Triple-A when Justin Turner returned. He then received another callup when active rosters expanded in September. Vargas remained with the Dodgers from there and made appearances at first base, second base, third base, left field and designated hitter.
Dave Roberts praised Miguel Vargas
Although he struggled while receiving inconsistent playing time, Vargas could ultimately find his way onto the Dodgers postseason roster, and he is someone the organization remains high on.
“He’s a silent assassin, and I say that as the biggest compliment,” manager Dave Roberts said of Vargas in September. “He’s got this youthful, boyish smile and disposition, but he is as tough as they come. He was raised in a baseball home, he knows the game inside and out, his baseball acumen is off the charts.
“When he’s in the batter’s box, he thinks that he’s the best option, and that confidence is pretty cool to see. But there’s also humility there. I’m excited to have him. He’s earned it and I expect him to impact us in the short term and also the long term. He should be wearing a Dodger uniform for a long time.”
