Dodgers News: Max Muncy Growing ‘More Comfortable’ With Playing Multiple Positions

Although Max Muncy spent the bulk of last season playing first base, the Los Angeles Dodgers additionally manned him at third base for 38 games (30 starts), second in 13 starts, and left field for six games.

Muncy proved capable of moving around in a pinch, but it was clear his comfort level resided at first base. After an offseason in which he was among the Dodgers to go dairy free, Muncy returned with a slimmed down frame and more nimble.

The added agility has not yet translated to Muncy grading out well at second base this year, he’s certainly passed the eye test. The 28-year-old looks strong up the middle rather than simply being capable of filling in on occasion.

Muncy admitted to being more sure of himself as he’s received more playing time at various positions, via SportsNet LA:

“Just getting more comfortable out there, having more confidence in yourself and having more opportunities to do it. I feel like that’s the biggest thing for me, is getting repeated opportunities. It kind of keeps confidence in yourself. When you get those plays, you want to make them, and it just keeps boosting your confidence.”

Muncy thus far is worth two defensive runs saved and posted a 0.6 UZR at third base this season, after finishing with zero and 0.0, respectively, in 2018. His zero DRS at second base is identical to last season’s mark, but Muncy’s UZR is down from 0.5 to -0.5.

He certainly looked the part of a second baseman on Tuesday night. First, leaping up to snag a line drive to end the third inning and later making a sliding stop and throw to Hyun-Jin Ryu covering first base in the fifth. Both plays preserved Ryu’s perfect game at the time.

Muncy’s ability to adequately play multiple positions will suit he and the Dodgers well as the season progresses. Manager Dave Roberts has been certain to providing adequate rest throughout the year, but also envisions Muncy as one of the club’s everyday players.
