The Los Angeles Dodgers completed a sweep of the Chicago Cubs in the Tokyo Series on Wednesday, which saw Max Muncy join a rare group in MLB history with a double in the second inning.
The 34-year-old became just the fourth player ever to record a hit in at least five countries/territories. Edgardo Alfonzo, Xander Bogaerts and Paul Goldschmidt have also accomplished the feat.
“I think it’s just a blessing,” Muncy said after the Dodgers’ 6-3 win. “Being here with the Dodgers for as long as I have, you get a lot of opportunities with the team that we have. To me, that’s just a blessing.
“I’m very thankful I get to be a part of these events that we’ve been doing. I’m thankful I was able to be a part of Korea last year, be a part of Japan this year, be a part of Mexico when we did it back in 2018. It’s just a blessing to be able to do that.
“You’re talking about trying to grow the game of baseball, experiencing different cultures, it’s just really cool to be able to do it. The stat is a random one, but it’s fun.”
Max Muncy now has at least one hit in Japan, the US, Canada, Mexico & South Korea

Muncy had been made somewhat aware of the potential that lied in front of him with the Dodgers playing in Japan after their Opening Day game and didn’t focus on it but could appreciate the uniqueness.
“I did, but I didn’t,” Muncy answered when asked if he knew about the stat. “I went on a podcast last night and they were talking about it. That was the only reason I knew about it.
“I had no idea before they mentioned it. Right after the (Opening Day) game they were talking about it, so it was in the back of my head when I got that hit. I was like, ‘This is pretty cool.’
“I’m not going to say it’s a meaningless stat, but it’s kind of a meaningless stat.”
Max Muncy’s stats in Dodgers international series
Muncy is in his 10th season with the Dodgers and has been fortunate enough to participate in three different international series.
The first came during the 2018 season with the Mexico Series against the San Diego Padres in Monterrey, Mexico. Muncy went 1-for-3 with a walk in the two-game set.
The two-time All-Star then faced the Padres in the Seoul Series last year, which saw him go 3-for-9 with two walks over two games.
Muncy finished the Tokyo Series with the one hit and two walks in nine plate appearances against the Cubs.
