The Los Angeles Dodgers overcame an early deficit to defeat the Chicago Cubs, 7-1, and complete a series sweep at Wrigley Field this past Sunday. But during the game, Max Muncy and Willson Contreras were involved in a minor collision that caused a tir.
The Cubs jumped out to an early 1-0 advantage when Rafael Ortega scored from third base on Willson Contreras’ two-out single. That lead would hold until the fourth inning, when Contreras was involved in a bizarre mishap with Muncy.
While chasing a wild pitch thrown by Justin Steele, Contreras made contact with Muncy’s groin. Muncy, who appeared to be in some pain, was checked on by Dodgers manager Dave Roberts and a trainer before remaining in the game.
Muncy recently went into detail about the incident and still isn’t sure what Contreras was trying to accomplish, via AM 570 L.A. Sports:
“He came over and asked if I was alright, but obviously I’m not in the right space of mind to answer that. So I told him to get away. I don’t know what he was doing. Replay shows one thing, but we’ll just leave it at that.”
Muncy wound up drawing a walk after the incident that loaded the bases with one out. It was followed by Justin Turner’s sacrifice fly tying the game.
Cody Bellinger then beat out a grounder for a go-ahead RBI infield single before the Cubs could get through the inning.
Muncy leaning into superstition after ending skid
Muncy had been mired in an 0-for-16 stretch before hitting a sinking line drive that dropped for a base hit in the seventh inning of last Wednesday’s matchup against the San Francisco Giants.
With momentum on his side, Muncy politely declined to speak with reporters as they approached him in the Dodgers clubhouse after the game. “I’m being superstitious right now,” he said with a smile.
“Last time I talked, I went without a hit for two weeks.”
Unfortunately for Muncy, the superstitious approach has yet to translate to improved results.
