The final weekend of the Major League Baseball season has been an exciting one as a lot of the playoff spots in the National League are still not yet decided. Among the teams jockeying for position are the Colorado Rockies, Los Angeles Dodgers and St. Louis Cardinals.
The Dodgers and Rockies have gone back and forth in the NL West standings for much of the past month, while the Cardinals are looking to remain alive for the NL Wild Card Game.
Before his final start of the season on Friday afternoon, Cardinals veteran Adam Wainwright said a motivational quote to the media to fire his team up.
That quote actually made its way to Dodgers utlityman Kiké Hernandez, who is using it as motivation of his own, as seen on SportsNet LA:
“I read something today on MLB’s Instagram. A quote from Adam Wainwright that I guess he said last night before his start. He said, ‘There’s two things you can do. Either quit or lay down, or go out there and play like your hair is on fire.’ That really stuck with me. I like that a lot. It’s a different way of looking into things, and that was my mentality going into tonight’s game.”
Wainwright ended up losing that game to the Chicago Cubs on Friday, putting the Dodgers in a very good spot to clinch the second Wild Card spot with their magic number sitting at one going into play Saturday.
The Dodgers were able to earn a win over the San Francisco Giants on Friday night, with Hernandez playing a big part in that by recording three hits off Madison Bumgarner. As was the case in 2017, Hernandez seems to be getting hot at the right time and will look to carry that into the postseason.
