With Major League Baseball attempting to play the 2020 regular season amid the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, players have been given the option to opt out if they are uncomfortable.
Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Mike Leake exercised that right, so too did Washington Nationals teammates Joe Ross and Ryan Zimmerman, Colorado Rockies outfielder Ian Desmond and free agent Tyson Ross.
Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said during the club’s first workout of Spring Training 2.0 that conversations remain ongoing with players. The Dodgers have made it clear they will support any player who decides to opt out, and restated their support for David Price in the wake of his decision to not play in 2020.
As the Dodgers await potentially learning additional players will opt out, Justin Turner is one player they won’t have to worry about replacing. “Honestly, for me it’s probably been one of the easier decisions in the league,” he said of playing in 2020.
“It’s just me and my wife at home, I don’t have kids. I wanted to play all along. I know there’s a 113-page document full of regulations, guidelines and procedures to try and help protect us as best as possible.
“I know the league and Players Association has been following closely along with other leagues and what they’re doing to ensure safety. I think we’re taking all the right steps and procedures to protect the players once they get inside the stadium.”
New procedures were on full display Friday as players arrived to Dodger Stadium with masks on. They were also staggered and worked in small groups. Clayton Kershaw and Turner nonetheless were among those ecstatic to be working out at Dodger Stadium.
“Honestly, it’s exciting. I think there’s a lot of energy and excitement that we’re back at the stadium, getting back on the field and have some form of a season to look forward to,” Turner said.
“Guys were sitting at home for three months wondering if this was even going to happen or if it was possible. I think guys are just elated to be here and get going.”
