Justin Turner was named the winner of the 2022 Roberto Clemente Award, which is presented annually to the player who best represents the game of baseball through extraordinary character, community involvement, philanthropy and positive contributions, both on and off the field.
Each team nominates one player to be considered for the league-wide winner of the award in tribute to Clemente’s achievements and character.
“The Dodger organization is very proud that Justin Turner has won the 2022 Roberto Clemente Award,” Dodgers president and CEO Stan Kasten said in a statement.
“Justin and his wife, Kourtney, embody everything that the Award stands for. Their unwavering dedication to the community and supporting everyone around them is truly special, and something we can all strive to achieve.”
Turner was the Los Angeles Dodgers’ nominee for the prestigious honor a fifth time in the past six seasons. Kenley Jansen was the Dodgers’ representative for the award in 2019.
Turner joins Clayton Kershaw (2012) and Steve Garvey (1981) as the only Dodgers to ever win the Roberto Clemente Award since it was first presented in 1971. He will be presented with the award prior to Game 3 of the World Series.
“It’s an absolute honor to be recognized by the Dodgers as the Roberto Clemente nominee for the fifth time,” Turner recently told DodgerBlue.com.
“Obviously Kourt and I take a lot of time in being heavily involved in the community and giving back to our fans, who we consider the best fans in baseball. To be mentioned in the same sentence as Roberto Clemente and be associated with No. 21 and philanthropy is probably one of the greatest awards and greatest recognitions you can receive.”
Justin and Kourtney Turner established the Justin Turner Foundation in 2016 to support homeless veterans, children (and their families) battling life-altering illnesses and diseases, and youth baseball organizations.
The couple’s most recent event was a second annual Turner Trot 5K that began at Dodger Stadium and concluded at the Dream Center. It was the first time the 3.1-mile trek was held in person, which raised more than $300,000 that will directly support the foundation’s beneficiaries.
The Turners not only are active through various initiatives with the Dream Center, but also support Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA), Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation (LADF), partnered with AM 570 L.A. Sports Radio and more. Justin and Kourtney additionally are on the board of trustees at CHLA.
Justin Turner Foundation recognized
Turner receiving the Roberto Clemente Award is the latest celebration and recognition of his and Kourtney’s philanthropic work.
In March 2019, the couple along with the Justin Turner Foundation were added to the prestigious Spotlight Wall at CHLA, and January 22 has been declared Justin Turner Day in the city of Los Angeles.
