The Los Angeles Dodgers designated Justin Marks for assignment on Thursday, in a corresponding move to adding Fabio Castillo to their 40-man roster. Los Angeles claimed Marks off waivers from the Tampa Bay Rays on May 9.
The Dodgers have seven days to attempt to trade Marks or place him on waivers. Should the left-hander clear waivers, he could be sent outright by Los Angeles to a Minor League affiliate or released. This process unfolded over 10 days under the previous MLB Collective Bargaining Agreement.
Marks went 2-0 with a 4.50 ERA and 1.50 WHIP in nine games with Triple-A Oklahoma City. He was 4-1 with a 4.60 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and held opponents to a .182/.297/.255 batting line in nine games (one start) with the Rays’ Triple-A Durham affiliate.
Over parts of nine seasons in the Minors, Marks is 46-66 with a 4.56 ERA and 1.41 WHIP. He was selected by the Oakland Athletics in the third round of the 2009 Draft.
Marks went on to make his MLB debut with the Kansas City Royals in 2014, though only appeared in one game. The 29-year-old pitched in four games for the Rays in 2016, and once this season.
He holds a combined 3.65 ERA, 6.94 FIP, 2.11 WHIP, 13 walks an nine strikeouts in 12.1 Major League innings. Marks was designated for assignment after throwing 1.1 innings in relief for the Rays on May 5 so Tampa Bay could reinstate Erasmo Ramirez from the paternity list.
