After leading MLB with 20 wins and finishing seventh in the 2021 National League Cy Young Award race, Julio Urías is in the midst of another stellar season for the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The left-hander is 17-7 with an NL-best 2.27 ERA, 3.71 FIP and 0.95 WHIP in 158.2 innings over 28 starts this season. He has allowed two or fewer runs in 22 of his outings and is holding opposing hitters to a .197 batting average.
With Miami Marlins ace Sandy Alcántara hitting a bit of a rough patch, Urías could once again be in the conversation to win the NL Cy Young Award.
The 26-year-old, however, has not put much thought into the possibility, per Bill Plunkett of the Southern California News Group:
Not really,” Urias said in Spanish when asked if he has given any thought to winning a Cy Young award this year. “Obviously there will be opinions and people will say a lot of things. But I try to stay focused on what I have to do each start. Those numbers will speak for themselves and we’ll see.”
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts has vouched for Urías to win the NL Cy Young Award on several occasions and recently did so again. “He should be right there,” Roberts said of Urías belonging in the conversation.
“Last year, I thought he was slighted as far as not being part of the conversation. This year, he’s back with another really good year. With all the numbers guys look at, with what he’s done this season, it’s worthy of the conversation. No doubt about it.
“I think Julio has been throwing the baseball as well as anybody in baseball since the (All-Star) break. Or even before the break, actually. I certainly don’t have a vote, but it’s hard to ignore what this guy does for a championship-caliber ballclub.
“He wasn’t an All-Star this year for some ridiculous reason, so to be able to be in that Cy Young conversation, I think that’s the floor.”
Freddie Freeman has also thrown his support behind Tony Gonsolin and Urías as being deserving candidates for the 2022 NL Cy Young Award.
Julio Urías tried to encourage Trea Turner & Gavin Lux
Urías turned in another quality start against the San Francisco Giants, but it wasn’t without a pair of defensive miscues by Trea Turner and Gavin Lux.
Urías was able to limit the damage and explained after the game that he tried to uplift Turner and Lux with encouragement.
