Dodgers News: Julio Urías Frustrated By ‘Too Short’ Of Start Against Mets

The Los Angeles Dodgers reached the finish line of playing 31 games in 30 days with Julio Urías on the mound and a chance to take three of four from the New York Mets.

Urías threw 90 pitches — his second-most this season — but only managed to pitch 5.1 innings of an eventual 5-4 loss for the Dodgers in extras. He held the Mets to one run despite issuing three walks to go along with three hits.

“Just the damage. That’s where the frustration comes,” Urías said through an interpreter after the game. “I fell a little short today. Especially after all the work the bullpen has done, just the damage, and the outing was too short.”

Coming off a 20-win season, Urías has yet to log more than six innings in any start this year. Though in most cases that’s been by design and Dodgers manager Dave Roberts prioritizing the long season ahead.

The Dodgers used five relief pitchers after Urías, none of whom were particularly effective. Brusdar Graterol wore the brunt of the struggles as he allowed the Mets to take a lead in the eighth inning.

They tacked on another run against Alex Vesia that inning, then scored against Craig Kimbrel in the 10th.

As for Urías, he didn’t factor into the decision and remains 3-5 over 11 starts this season. Even with some of the disappointment in his performance, the left-hander lowered his ERA to 2.78.

“I thought Julio figured it out during the outing. I thought the stuff was good, just missing at times” Roberts said. “But where he went in the game, wasn’t as efficient as we would’ve liked but I thought we got as much out of him as we could have, so credit to him there.”

Urías focused on walks heading into Giants start

Barring any changes to the Dodgers starting rotation order this week, Urías’ next time on the mound is scheduled to come Saturday in a nationally televised matchup with the San Francisco Giants.

“Those base on balls are always bad, but it’s one of those adjustments I have to make going into San Francisco,” he said.

Urías went an efficient six scoreless innings on 65 pitches his last time facing the Giants on May 3. He scattered three hits and didn’t issue any walks, but Roberts felt the Giants made better contact in Urías’ final inning of work, which prompted going to the Dodgers bullpen.
