Dodgers News: Julio Urias’ Fastball Up To 92 MPH In Bullpen Sessions

The past year has been a difficult one for Los Angeles Dodgers young left-handed pitcher Julio Urias, who was forced to undergo shoulder surgery last July after suffering the injury in a Minor League outing.

Given that he is just 21 years of age, the Dodgers are being extremely cautious with his rehab. He was supposed to get back on a mound for the first time at the end of Spring Training, but that did not end up happening until June.

His rehab seems to be progressing well though as Urias is regularly throwing bullpen sessions at the team’s Spring Training facility in Arizona.

Those bullpen sessions are starting to ramp up a bit now, with his fastball almost back at where it was before undergoing the surgery, via Kaelen Jones of MLB.com:

Right-hander Tom Koehler (strained right shoulder) and left-hander Julio Urias (shoulder surgery) have been at the facility rehabbing and each recently threw bullpen sessions. Urias’ fastball touched 91 and 92 mph, according to Roberts.

While it still seems like Urias is a ways away from returning to game action, this is certainly a positive sign for a pitcher coming back from a serious shoulder surgery.

The hope is that Urias will be able to contribute at the big league level at some point this season, whether that be as a starter or out of the bullpen.

Any production he can give them this season will be a pleasant surprise though, and then he will be back to full strength and ready to compete for a spot in the starting rotation next spring.
