The 2016 Major League Baseball Futures Game took place on Sunday at Petco Park and two players in the Los Angeles Dodgers’ farm system participated in the event.
Infielder Willie Calhoun from Double-A Tulsa and pitcher Jharel Cotton from Triple-A Oklahoma City represented the Dodgers’ organization in a game that saw the World Team pull away from the USA and win by a score of 11-3.
Calhoun played for Team USA, which was managed by former San Diego Padres closer Trevor Hoffman. Cotton was on the World Team that was led by former big league slugger Moises Alou. Neither player started for their respective teams, but entered later in the game.
For Calhoun, it was a second time to showcase his talents as he also was named to the 2016 Texas League All-Star Game. He played the final four innings at second base and went 0-for-2.
Calhoun flashed some of power in his first at-bat with a fly ball to the warning track, and he grounded out in his second trip to the plate.
The 21-year-old is batting .260/.326/.482 with 16 doubles, 17 home runs and 58 RBIs over 82 games with the Drillers this season. Cotton’s appearance in the Futures Game may not have been as extensive as Calhoun’s, but the right-hander earned the win despite only throwing three pitches.
Cotton on the year is 7-4 with a 4.74 ERA and 1.13 WHIP in 19 games (13 starts) for the Oklahoma City Dodgers.
