The Los Angeles Dodgers got back in the win column on Monday with a 13-4 victory over the Colorado Rockies at Dodger Stadium, propelled by a two-out rally in the fifth inning that featured contributions from James Outman and J.D. Martinez.
Freddie Freeman got things started with a double, and Will Smith and Max Muncy followed with walks to load the bases. Martinez then tied the game with a two-run single after nearly hitting a go-ahead grand slam.
The floodgates opened from there as Outman hit a two-run triple that put L.A. up 6-4. He would add another RBI triple in the seventh inning to become the first Dodgers player with multiple three-baggers in a game since Yasiel Puig on July 25, 2014.
“Honestly, J.D. got me fired up. His two-out knock, I think, gave everybody life,” Outman said after the win. “I think once one of us go, we all go.”
Outman further credited the Dodgers lineup as a whole for being able to string together seven runs with two outs. “I think we can swing it, I think we can throw the ball and I think we can play catch,” he began. “I think we’re a good team. The comeback win is a good reminder for us that we’re a good team.”
Outman finished the night with the two triples and three RBI in five at-bats. He has gotten off to an excellent start this season, hitting .333/.500/.917 with three extra-base hits and five RBI in five games.
Jason Heyward praises James Outman
Jason Heyward also had a big game against the Rockies as he went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBI. Like many of his other teammates, he also gave credit to Outman for his key contributions in the fifth inning.
“I’ve got to look back on it,” Heyward answered when asked to choose one key at-bat during the Dodgers’ rally. “The whole game to me is a blur. That’s one part I will say about the pitch clock, is that it happens fast.
“As a bench guy, I’m seeing that. At times where you’re trying to stay loose and stay ready, you don’t see a lot of the game the same way you would before. You’ve got to really lock in and pay attention. So it was a blur. I feel like we all did it together.
“To me, one thing that stands out about Outman, one of his triples, he was just up there with the intent of getting the guy over. He ends up hitting a triple, I think couple RBIs out of that. That was really nice for us and for him just trying to play the game the right away.”
