Jack Flaherty spent parts of seven seasons as a member of the St. Louis Cardinals after they selected him in the first round of the 2014 MLB Draft.
Flaherty’s time with the Cardinals organization came to an end last year when they traded him to the Baltimore Orioles at the deadline. He became a free agent during the offseason and signed a one-year contract with the Detroit Tigers, only to get moved at the trade deadline once again.
Now Flaherty is filling a key role for the Dodgers as they looked to fortify their rotation for the playoffs. That time will come, and on the immediate schedule is a weekend series against the Cardinals to finish the Dodgers’ road trip.
After appearing in 122 games (118 starts) in his seven seasons with the Cardinals, Flaherty is looking forward to visiting Busch Stadium for the first time since being traded to the Orioles in 2023, via SportsNet LA:
“It’ll be good to go back there for the first time. I spent a lot of years there, a lot of good memories, a lot of good people. Looking forward to it, but looking forward to winning some ballgames too.”
While Flaherty is with the Dodgers on their road trip, he won’t take the mound against his former team due to starting Thursday.
Flaherty has made three starts since being traded to the Dodgers on July 30, going 2-0 with a 3.78 ERA and 1.32 WHIP.
Not with Flaherty and the Dodgers is Tommy Edman, who was acquired from the Cardinals this year as part of a three-team trade with the Chicago White Sox. Edman is on a rehab assignment with Triple-A Oklahoma City and is expected to be activated next week.
Jack Flaherty’s career with Cardinals
Flaherty enjoyed a good amount individual and team success during his time with the Cardinals, including four straight postseason appearances from 2019-2022. He also was named National League Pitcher of the Month twice and earned a selection to the All-MLB Second Team.
Flaherty made his MLB debut on Sept. 1, 2017, but it was a brief stint in the Majors as he made just six appearances for the team that season.
In 2018 and 2019 he developed into one of the league’s best young pitchers, with a 3.34 ERA and 2.75 ERA, respectively. Flaherty struggled to stay healthy over the next few seasons and wasn’t able to recapture his old form with the Cardinals.
The 2019 season remains the best of Flaherty’s career thus far as he pitched to a 2.75 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 231 strikeouts over 196.1 innings.
