The Los Angeles Dodgers placed Hyun-Jin Ryu on the 10-day disabled list with left hip contusion and recalled Josh Fields from Oklahoma City. Manager Dave Roberts is hopeful the hip tightness will only result in Ryu missing one start.
Los Angeles had planned to keep with a six-man starting rotation through their weekend series against the San Diego Padres, but Monday’s development alters that. Kenta Maeda, Brandon McCarthy and Clayton Kershaw are slated to start during the three-game set at Petco Park.
Ryu felt discomfort in his glute after sliding into second base during the fourth inning of Sunday’s game against the Philadelphia Phillies. He went on to pitch 5.1 innings, allowing just one run on three hits, and finishing with a season-high nine strikeouts.
The win was Ryu’s first since Aug. 31, 2014. Overall this season, the southpaw is 1-4 with a 4.05 ERA and 1.31 WHIP.
After a slow start to the year, Ryu has allowed just one run in each of his past two outings, and completed six innings in two of three starts.
Fields’ frequent trips to and from Oklahoma City continue, as he returns two days after being sent down when Grant Dayton was activated from the disabled list.
Fields has allowed just one run in seven innings pitched across nine relief appearances (1.29 ERA) for the Dodgers. Fields is in his third stint with the team this year.
After setting an MLB record last season by placing 28 different players on the disabled list, the Dodgers are already up to 13 this season.
