While it’s plausible a roster crunch will require at least one Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder with Major League experience to begin the season in the Minors, the organization added to their depth at the position group on multiple occasions throughout the offseason.
One of the Dodgers’ early additions was signing Henry Ramos to a Minor League contract. He was later included among the club’s non-roster invitees to Spring Training. But after appearing in eight Cactus League games, Ramos’ spring has come to an end.
According to Ken Gurnick of MLB.com, the 24-year-old will miss at least one month after suffering a groin injury:
The news was not good for non-roster outfielder Henry Ramos, who will miss four to six weeks with a torn right groin.
Ramos was one of three players — Andre Ethier and Scott Kazmir, the others — who was removed early in Monday’s game against the Colorado Rockies at Salt River Fields. Ramos suffered his injury in the third inning while running down the line on a bunt attempt. He exited with one out in the bottom half of the inning.
While Ramos was a longshot to make the Dodgers’ roster, the timeline puts his availability for Opening Day of the Minor League season in jeopardy. Ramos went 5-for-14 (.357) with one triple, one home run, six RBI and one walk this spring. He trailed only Chase Utley (seven) for the team lead in RBI.
Ramos was selected by the Boston Red Sox in the fifth round of the 2010 Draft. He reached Triple-A Pawtucket last season for the first time in his career, and hit .247/.285/.400 with eight doubles, three triples, five home runs and 29 RBI in 57 games.
Including time spent with Double-A Portland in 2016, the switch-hitting outfielder batted a combined .263/.306/.402 with 14 doubles, six triples, eight home runs and 40 RBI in the Minors.
