The Los Angeles Dodgers placed Grant Dayton on the 10-day disabled list with neck stiffness and recalled Kyle Farmer from Triple-A Oklahoma City. Farmer, who is wearing No. 65, will make his MLB debut if or when he appears in a game for the Dodgers.
He was previously added to the 40-man roster last November to protect against potentially getting selected in the 2016 Rule 5 Draft. Farmer began this season with Double-A Tulsa, and joined Oklahoma City in late May.
He hit a combined .326/.384/.488 with 20 doubles, nine home runs and 47 RBI. A natural catcher, Farmer also made starts at first base, second base, third base and shortstop for OKC this season.
Prior to this year, the 26-year-old had only played third base in addition to catching. Farmer gives the Dodgers yet another versatile backup catcher.
Dayton lands on the DL due to neck trouble for a second time this season. He returned July 20 after missing 11 games. Dayton last pitched July 24, allowing a solo home run, three total hits, and only retiring one of three batters faced.
Of his 29 games this season, 22 have been scoreless efforts. Overall this season, Dayton is 1-1 with a 4.94 ERA, 1.31 whip, 12 walks and 20 strikeouts in 23.2 innings.
The year has been in stark contrast to 2016, when Dayton made his MLB debut and went on to yield a 2.05 ERA and 0.76 WHIP in 25 games (26.1 innings).
