The possibility of the Los Angeles Dodgers virtually winning a World Series this year came to an end Friday night as Gavin Lux was swept by the Tampa Bay Rays’ Blake Snell in the quarterfinals of the MLB The Show Players League playoffs.
Lux finished the regular season play 19-10 and qualified for the playoffs via the eighth and final spot. Snell went 24-5, finishing one game ahead of the Texas Rangers’ Joey Gallo and clinching the No. 1 overall seed.
Snell defeated Lux during the regular season and squeaked out a pair of one-run victories (3-2 and 5-4) to sweep the Dodgers’ top prospect in the playoffs. Snell’s second win, at Dodger Stadium, was of the comeback variety.
Snell was propelled by a go-ahead home run in the third inning, which left Lux incredulous.

While Lux qualified for the playoffs at 19-10, he cooled as the regular season wore on. Lux, who regularly proved to be one of the league’s better players, got off to a 12-4 start before scuffling a bit.
He nonetheless finished two games ahead of the San Diego Padres’ Fernando Tatis Jr. for the best record in the National League West.
Each MLB team had a representative in the video game league. The Players League is benefiting Boys & Girls Clubs of America and Boys & Girls Clubs of Canada, with a total of $175,000 being donated across the 30 MLB team communities.

MLB, the MLB Players Association and Sony Interactive Entertainment are donating $5,000 on behalf of each participating player to a Boys & Girls Clubs affiliate in their team’s community. The league champion will earn an additional $25,000 donation to a Boys & Girls Club in his community.
The semifinals start Saturday, with ESPN2 and FS1 each airing a best-of-three series. The winners of each semifinal will then meet in the best-of-five championship series on Sunday, May 3, which is scheduled to be televised on ESPN.
