In what was a bit of a surprise move, Los Angeles Dodgers top prospect Gavin Lux was left off the Opening Day roster to begin the 2020 season.

After reporting to Summer Camp late for undisclosed reasons, Lux clearly didn’t look like his usual self, so he began the season training at the team’s alternate site at USC.

Now that the first half of the shortened schedule has come and gone, some have begun to question when Lux will join the team. He was a September callup last year and wound up starting some games at second base in the postseason.

Those questions have been amplified in recent days as the Dodgers streamed an intrasquad scrimmage during the team’s day off on Monday. Lux participated and hit two home runs off teammate Tony Gonsolin.

“Really good,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said of Lux’s showing. “Obviously he’s facing a good arm in Tony, and hitting a homer off the fastball and one off the changeup, Gavin is and has been in a good place. His being recalled seems like a very good possibility at some point.”

Lux looked like a completely different player on Monday than he did during Summer Camp, which is a good sign that he has been able to get solid work in at the alternate training site.

Considering the Dodgers don’t have a true starting second baseman, Lux still may have an opportunity to win the job once he is recalled. The Dodgers have stated time and time again that if Lux is recalled, it likely would be to give him an opportunity to be an everyday player as there isn’t much benefit for him to sit on the bench.

Lux on taxi squad for first time

With the Dodgers beginning their road trip on Tuesday night in San Francisco, Lux traveled with the team for the first time this season as a member of the taxi squad.

Considering he is with the team, the Dodgers can now recall him at any time, so it could potentially come sooner rather than later. The Dodgers’ road trip consists of two more games in San Francisco followed by three in Texas.
