Evan Phillips has been a breakout star for the Los Angeles Dodgers bullpen and an invaluable high-leverage reliever for manager Dave Roberts.
Phillips was once again called on to protect a lead in the series opener against the Milwaukee Brewers before he was hit in the knee with a 105 mph comebacker off the bat of Christian Yelich. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts and a trainer checked on Phillips, who threw a few warmup pitches before remaining in the game.
He promptly retired the next two batters to complete yet another scoreless inning.
Phillips then received treatment after the game and is unconcerned about any long-term injury, per Fabain Ardaya of The Athletic:
Evan Phillips said the chopper got him in the inside of his left knee. Feels okay right now after receiving treatment and didn’t seem worried about it.

Phillips’ confidence in his health was validated when he pitched on Tuesday night as well.
In 47 innings this season, Phillips has posted a 1.34 ERA and 2.25 FIP while striking out 31.4% of hitters with a walk rate of just 7%. He additionally has 15 holds and one save since taking over in a setup role this season.
With multiple late-inning relievers already on the injured list, including Blake Treinen, Tommy Kahnle and Brusdar Graterol, an injury to Phillips would have created a lot of stress on the rest of the bullpen. However, Treinen and Graterol are both expected to return in the near future as they are currently on rehab assignments.
Dustin May returning to Dodgers rotation
Dustin May was emerging as a key contributor in the Dodgers’ starting rotation last season but had his year cut short due to a torn ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) in his right elbow that required Tommy John surgery.
They maintained a cautious approach throughout May’s rehab process even while taking on injuries to Walker Buehler and Clayton Kershaw. However, last week, Roberts said May was on track to return from the 60-day injured list during the upcoming home series against the Miami Marlins.
Roberts has now decided on the Dodgers activating May to start Saturday at Dodger Stadium.
