The Los Angeles Dodgers will be without Evan Phillips for the foreseeable future after he underwent Tommy John surgery on June 4 to repair the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) in his right elbow. The procedure was completed by Dodgers team physician Dr. Neal ElAttrache.
Phillips began the year on the injured list because of the same right shoulder trouble that prevented him from pitching in the World Series. Phillips made his 2025 debut on April 19 and appeared in seven games before going back on the IL with right forearm discomfort.
The decision for Phillips to undergo Tommy John surgery came after he didn’t respond well to playing catch last month. The Dodgers initially hoped rest and treatment would help keep the 30-year-old available for the rest of the season.
Phillips is now on the road to recovery and expressed his excitement to return to the mound in 2026.
Phillips presumably won’t be an option for the Dodgers until the second half of next season, which is also his final year of team control before reaching free agency.
Phillips threw 5.2 scoreless innings this season prior to undergoing Tommy John surgery. He owns a 2.22 ERA and 0.94 WHIP with 45 saves in 201 appearances for the Dodgers.
Evan Phillips ‘at peace’ with Tommy John surgery
Phillips had a difficult time coming to terms with his Tommy John surgery at first but said he got to a point of being ‘at peace’ with the decision, albeit frustrated and disappointed to no longer be able to contribute in 2025.
