The Los Angeles Dodgers plan to put David Price on the 15-day injured list in order to recall Ryan Pepiot from Triple-A Oklahoma City for his spot start in the series finale against the San Diego Padres.

Andrew Heaney had been the listed probable for the ESPN Sunday Night Baseball broadcast, but that changed Saturday. Prior to the Dodgers’ emphatic 12-1 win, manager Dave Roberts confirmed Pepiot would be inserted to provide the rest of the rotation with an extra day of rest.

However, he declined to divulge which pitcher was going on the IL in order for Pepiot to return before the minimum 15-day option period. That changed after the Dodgers snapped their three-game losing streak, as Roberts revealed Price had been pushing through injuries.

“He’s had a lot of kind of arm, elbow, wrist things, and he’s been grinding as much as he could for us,” Roberts said. “There’s been some stuff with the history of his workload and kind of what he’s done. So we’ve stayed away from him obviously, the last five days.

“We got a scan and it’s kind of what we thought. So right now we’re going to shut David down, we’re going retro, and get them back to health. Ryan, I said earlier he was going to start, but we’re going to open with Caleb Ferguson. We’ll open Fergie and then right after that Pepiot will get in there.”

Roberts further elaborated that Price has “a lot of inflammation” in his left wrist. “He hasn’t been really healthy all year,” Roberts added. “But he’s been grinding and trying to pick everybody up. I just think we kind of came to a breaking point there in Miami.”

David Price left wrist injury history

While a member of the Boston Red Sox, Price underwent surgery in September 2019 to remove a cyst from his left wrist. An MRI in August of that year discovered the triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) cyst and Price was shut down for three weeks.

He pitched just two innings in one start back from the IL, but experienced tightness in the ensuing days and ultimately a decision was made to have season-ending surgery. The cyst impacted Price’s grip on offspeed pitches and was believed to have contributed to his struggles that season.

After Price was traded to the Dodgers in February 2020, he said the left wrist had fully healed and didn’t expect to have any lingering trouble.
