The 2028 Summer Olympics will be held in Los Angeles, with baseball already being announced as one of the sports on the schedule.
It marks the seventh time that baseball will be featured in the Olympics and the first since the 2020 games, when Japan defeated the United States to win the gold medal.
Unlike previous years when mostly collegiate and Minor League players represented the United States baseball team, there is growing optimism that Major Leaguers will be able to participate in the 2028 Summer Olympics.
If that ends up being the case, Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts expressed an interest in leading Team USA, via Dylan Hernandez of the California Post:
“I want to manage the Olympic team,” Roberts told the California Post. “That’s what I want to do. In L.A., I want to manage that team.”
Roberts believes he is an ideal candidate to manage the United States due to his ties to Los Angeles:
“I went to school here,” the UCLA graduate said. “I manage the Dodgers.
“It’s a no-brainer.”
It would also be fitting for Roberts to manage Team USA in the 2028 Summer Olympics given that Dodger Stadium is the host venue for the baseball games.
Whether MLB stars will be able to participate is going to depend on the league and Players Association reaching an agreement with LA28, the organizing committee for the 2028 Olympics.
Will MLB change schedule for 2028 Summer Olympics?
The 2028 Summer Olympic baseball games will be held July 13-19, which coincides with MLB All-Star Week.
The Midsummer Classic is scheduled to take place on July 11, potentially at Oracle Park, so MLB would likely have to slightly extend its All-Star break to accommodate the Olympic Games.
