Dodgers News: Dave Roberts Considers Caleb Ferguson’s Start Vs. Giants ‘Best Outing’ Of Young Career

The Los Angeles Dodgers saw their five-game winning streak snapped on Sunday afternoon as they fell to the San Francisco Giants, 4-1, in the finale of a three-game series and homestand.

Caleb Ferguson got the start for the Dodgers and was able to keep the Dodgers in the game despite the offense not providing him much support. Ferguson made it through five innings for the first time in his Major League career.

He allowed just two hits and four runs (three earned) while striking out six and walking one. He was hurt by surrendering two-run home runs — in the first and third innings.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts nonetheless was impressed with Ferguson’s outing, calling it the best of his career thus far, via Mike DiGiovanna of the L.A. Times:

“Today was his best outing of the three,” Roberts said. “I thought he did a great job of pounding the strike zone, getting some empty swings with the fastball, striking with the curveball, and at times, the changeup was good. He just made two mistakes. Outside of that, I thought he pitched really well.”

The plan for Ferguson moving forward is currently unknown, although he could possibly remain in the big leagues at least until Walker Buehler or Clayton Kershaw is able to return from the disabled list.

With an off day on Thursday, the Dodgers could option Ferguson back to the Minor Leagues and then call him back up when he is needed for another start if they choose. Ferguson has posted a 7.59 ERA and 1.41 WHIP with 12 strikeouts and six walks in 10.2 innings across his first three Major League starts.

At just 21 years of age, he would likely still be in the Minors right now if it were not for the Dodgers having so many injuries in their starting rotation.
