Dodgers News: Daron Sutton Filling In For Joe Davis On SportsNet LA

Daron Sutton handled play-by-play duties on SportsNet LA for their broadcast of the series finale between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Washington Nationals, and he will continue to fill in for Joe Davis as the team finishes their road trip.

Sutton is coming off a season in which he was a secondary play-by-play man to Matt Vasgersian for the L.A. Angels. Games were split between the two during the first half last year due to Vasgersian having responsibilities with ESPN and MLB Network.

However, Sutton was informed last July that he no longer would be included as part of the Angels broadcast team for Bally Sports West. He was surprised by the decision and the Angels never publicly offered an explanation behind the change.

Sutton has maintained it did not stem from any sort of disciplinary action.

While a disappointing development at the time, he’s now getting an opportunity to call games for a Dodgers franchise that his father, Don Sutton, starred for. It’s unclear if Daron will be kept on as a part-time broadcaster beyond this weekend.

The Dodgers’ road trip began with their broadcasters back to calling games remotely due to recent positive coronavirus (COVID-19) tests within the organization. Jaime Jarrín and Charley Steiner confirmed they were among those to test positive.

SportsNet LA reporter Kirsten Watson joined the team for the start of the series against the Washington Nationals.

Sutton is getting to fill in while Davis tends to his duties as the lead play-by-play man for Fox baseball.

Sutton congratulated Kershaw

When Clayton Kershaw passed Don Sutton to become all-time Dodgers wins leader, Daron was among those to record a message that was put together in a compilation video that also featured Vin Scully and A.J. Ellis, among several others.
