Dodgers News: Corey Seager Wins 2017 Silver Slugger Award

Los Angeles Dodgers shortstop Corey Seager won a Silver Slugger Award for the second time in as many seasons. Seager is the franchise’s only shortstop to ever win a Silver Slugger. Last season, he became the Dodgers’ first player since Matt Kemp in 2011 to win the offensive award.

Seager finished the year batting .295/.375/.479 with 33 doubles, 22 home runs, 77 RBI, a .364 wOBA and 127 wRC+ in 145 games. He was on pace to match — and possibly exceed — production from his rookie campaign, but was slowed by a balky right elbow in late August and into September.

The minor injury was said to primarily impact Seager defensively and it kept him out of the lineup for 11 consecutive games. He did make five pinch-hit appearances during that span, notching one hit.

Seager led all NL shortstops with 159 total hits and 67 walks; ranked second in doubles, on-base plus slugging percentage (.854) and walk rate (10.9 percent); tied for second in RBI; and was fourth in home runs.

Moreover, the 23-year-old was second to Zack Cozart in wOBA and wRC+. Cozart was voted the starter at shortstop for the NL team in the All-Star Game.

The Silver Slugger is the first award Seager received this year. He was a finalist for a Gold Glove, which expectedly went to San Francisco Giants shortstop Brandon Crawford.
