Arizona Diamondbacks center fielder Corbin Carroll was named the winner of the 2023 National League Rookie of the Year Award, finishing ahead of the New York Mets’ Kodai Senga and Los Angeles Dodgers’ James Outman. Carroll won the award unanimously, finishing with all 30 first place votes.
Carroll hit .285/.362/.506 with 25 home runs, 116 runs scored, 76 RBI, 54 stolen bases, a 133 wRC+ and 6.0 WAR. For much of the season, the 22-year-old was in the conversation for the NL MVP award, but ultimately fell out of the running with the historic seasons from Ronald Acuña Jr. Freddie Freeman and Mookie Betts.
He led all qualified rookies in the NL in WAR, home runs, stolen bases and runs scored, and finished second in RBI and wRC+. Carroll is the first Diamondbacks’ player to win the Rookie of the Year Award.
Senga finished second in voting after posting a 2.98 ERA, 3.63 FIP and 1.22 WHIP across 166.1 innings while striking out 10.93 hitters per nine and walking 4.17 per nine. Across 29 starts, the 30-year-old went 12-7 and accumulated 3.4 WAR.
Among rookies with at least 100 innings pitched, Senga led in ERA, strikeouts (202), K/9, WAR and innings pitched, and finished second in FIP and WHIP behind Bobby Miller.
Outman finished the season batting .248/.353/.437 with 16 doubles, three triples, 23 home runs, 70 RBI, 86 runs scored and 16 stolen bases in 151 games. Among qualified rookies, he ranked third in runs scored and WAR (4.4), sixth in home runs and RBI, ninth in walk percentage (12%) and T-13th in wRC+ (118).
The 26-year-old was named the NL Rookie of the Month for April after batting .292/.376/.615 with four doubles, three triples, seven home runs and 20 RBI to go along with four stolen bases and 11 walks while appearing in each of the team’s 29 games (26 starts).
Outman was also named NL Rookie of the Month for August, becoming just the second player in Dodgers franchise history to earn the honor twice (Cody Bellinger, May and June 2017).
