With a lack of production from their collective group of outfielders, coupled with multiple injuries, the Los Angeles Dodgers were moved to call up Cody Bellinger from Triple-A Oklahoma City on Tuesday.
Not only did Bellinger join the Dodgers for the first time in his career, he was immediately thrust into the fire — starting in left field and batting eighth against the San Francisco Giants. The 21-year-old joined Joc Pederson, Corey Seager and Julio Urias as prospects to make their heralded arrival.
In the case of Bellinger and Urias, it’s come sooner than anticipated. Bellinger leaned on Seager for some guidance, which he found to be useful, via SportsNet LA:
“Seager gave me the best advice I got. It was to go 10 minutes before I usually stretch, to soak it all in, watch the people come in. So that’s what I did, it was awesome. … It was a fun game, great atmosphere, and good to be a part of it.”
Bellinger went 1-for-3 with an intentional walk in the Dodgers’ 2-1 victory. His first career hit was an infield single in the ninth inning. Bellinger conceded that didn’t match what he’d envisioned — a home run — but would nonetheless enjoy it.
While versatile, the organization’s top position-player prospect is primarily expected to play left and center field while up with the Dodgers. Manager Dave Roberts declined to state how long the club anticipates Bellinger being on the active roster.
