Dodgers News: Clinching NL West Against Phillies Would Be ‘A Little Weird’ For Chase Utley

The Los Angeles Dodgers were the first team to go on a 43-7 run since the 1912 New York Giants, and it was part of a 50-10 that propelled them to becoming the first team to 90 wins this season. The success afforded the Dodgers with a cushion they heavily leaned on.

It wasn’t until last week that the Dodgers snapped an 11-game losing streak. It was the franchise’s longest since the 1944 season. What’s more, the Dodgers became the first team in MLB history to win 15 of 16 and lose 15 of 16 games in the same season.

They righted the ship to win a combined four consecutive games in contests against the San Francisco Giants and Washington Nationals. They failed to sweep the Nationals, however, and now are on a three-game losing streak.

Nonetheless, Los Angeles enters play Wednesday with an opportunity to claim a fifth straight National League West title.

That it may come at Citizens Bank Park, where Chase Utley has many fond memories during his days with the Phillies, presents somewhat of an uneasy scenario for the veteran, per Bill Plunkett of the Southern California News Group:

“If you make me think about it – you know I don’t like to look too far ahead. … Initially, it would probably be a little weird because I spent so many years there, winning divisions and celebrating. To do it in the other clubhouse, initially, would probably feel a little weird.”

Over parts of 13 seasons with the Phillies, Utley won five consecutive NL East titles from 2007-11. The Phillies won the NL pennant in 2008 and 2009, and the 2008 World Series. Part of their success, with Utley playing a key role, came at the Dodgers’ expense.

Further muddying an already-strange situation, the Dodgers may need to remain in the visiting clubhouse for a couple hours. In order to clinch the NL West, they must first defeat the Phillies. First pitch is set for 4:05 p.m. PT.

The Dodgers also need help from the San Diego Padres, who host the Arizona Diamondbacks at 6:10 p.m. PT.
