It has nearly been a full month since Major League Baseball and other professional sports leagues decided to temporarily suspend operations due to the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
While the situation remains uncertain for many areas of the country, MLB has begun assessing its options in recent days with regard to potentially resuming play.
A scenario being discussed involves all 30 teams beginning the 2020 regular season in Arizona, where games would be played at Chase Field and upwards of 10 Spring Training facilities as soon as May.
The idea is said to only be in the early stages, and MLB made it clear they haven’t committed to any proposal yet.
As the wait for baseball continues, Los Angeles Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw acknowledged he wants to return to the field in the near future but only once it’s deemed safe for every player, via SportsNet LA:
“It’s been different, obviously, for everybody. Just being home at this time of year is so strange for me. I’m never in Texas at this time. I think it really hit home for me on Opening Day — or what was supposed to be Opening Day. Not being there, but a lot of people are going through much more difficult things than not playing baseball.
“But just for me, not to be out there, it was sad. I just wanted to be out there. I miss it, (but) being home has its benefits. I’m getting to see my kiddos. Cooper is two months old now, so I’m getting to see him every day, which is awesome. But yeah, I miss baseball, just like everybody else. I want to be out there as soon as possible and as soon as it’s safe for everybody.”
Like many players and fans, Kershaw was disappointed that Opening Day couldn’t take place on its original planned date of March 26.
Despite the regular season being indefinitely delayed twice now, Kershaw has been playing catch at home and vows to be ready to go if and when play resumes.
Prior to the sports world coming to a halt, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts had named Kershaw the Opening Day starter.
