The Los Angeles Dodgers suffered a frustrating loss on Saturday evening at the hands of the Milwaukee Brewers, squandering an early 2-0 lead and falling 4-2 at Miller Park.
Defense was an issue for the Dodgers as they made three errors, two of which came while Clayton Kershaw was on the mound. Kershaw looked as good as he has looked all season for a better part of his start.
But he ultimately gave up seven hits and four runs in six innings while striking out five without issuing a walk. Because of the errors committed behind him, only one of those runs was earned.
After the game, Kershaw analyzed his outing, listing what he was pleased with and what made him unhappy, as seen on SportsNet LA:
“I can think of two or three pitches I want back. I think the first-pitch homer to Yelich, he’s swinging the bat really well right now so you can’t really give him one right there, and then the double to Braun too. Both pitches, first-pitch fastballs, the location probably could have been better on both of those. And then that last one to Broxton, just kind of left it over the plate. But I worked in and out of some trouble when I needed to and I didn’t think I gave up a lot of hard contact today, for the most part. So there’s some good things in there, but ultimately we lost.”
The loss dropped Kershaw to 3-5 in 14 starts this season, although he has posted a 2.64 ERA and 1.09 WHIP with 83 strikeouts and 17 walks in 81.2 innings.
The most important thing for Kershaw is that he came out of the start healthy and seems to be getting closer to his usual self with each turn in the rotation.
It will be interesting to see if the Dodgers decide to give him an extra day of rest before his next start of if they keep Kershaw on his preferred five-day routine.
